Q: I did not open right away. but when i did, i found that the paper (the picture) pieces are pealing back. can i return it, tho the return date is past?

That would be up to the seller but most likely not. I have noticed for items like this that if it was stored in an area of high heat it is possible for it to peel like that.

Q: Is that a chicken with the shepherds? lol

I do not own this puzle. I own the other one where the pieces standup on their own.
