Wireless functionality great, clean sounds OK, distortion less great.
I've had my Boss Katana Air EX for about 3 months but I'm seriously starting to regret it and I felt it was the right time to pop a little review in.I love the wireless nature of it. Picking up the guitar and being able to play, immediately, with no fuss is really great for making it easy to start practice. The sound is generally great and it's obviously completely different from the other desktop amps available. It makes the Yamaha THR series, the Blackstars, the NU-X, and the Spark seem like toys by comparison. However, it's really lacking in support. There are around 60 presets in the Boss Tone Studio but I'd suggest about 20% are completely unusable for anything but showcasing what the amp is capable of. You'd never make music with these patches. The overdrives and distortions are overly fuzzy. There's a lot of restrictions on what effects you can have running at the same time. The lack of support is really problematic. There's no good way to share tones. All of the Katana ones don't work with the Air range. The pedal they sell to support it doesn't have enough buttons and nobody is making a compatible footpedal.Changing tones using the app isn't a viable solution. When you do it via the phone, the sound cuts out for about a second whilst the new tone kicks in. That's not going to go well mid song. All in all, it feels like a missed opportunity. A great sounding amp but I get the feeling it's going to be quickly replaced by a lot of people, in favour of the next available option.Edit: Since posting this, Xsonic have updated the Xsonic BW to support the Katana Air EX. This does make it more usable. However, Positive have released a new version to replace the Spark 40 and it's just a much better deal than the Katana Air EX. When they become more prevalent, I'll be looking for a trade.
