Q: Is this thing really ribbed like it shows in the photo? If so, how does that work out when tooling?

yes they are ribbed and they worked great for tooling. I didn't notice any problems using them. They are heavy and sturdy. I have used other types of mallets and I like these compared to them.

Q: Can washers be added to the head to make it heavier?

You can. The large is about 19 oz. though which is pretty hefty

Q: What is the benefit of this vs mallet style?

I like this vs mallet because it is a bit more forgiving when I miss-hit. I also tend to use less force using this which is good when I am trying to control the tools I am hitting with it. It basically is a personal preference which you use. I also like the look of this vs a conventional mallet.
